In the event of an emergency, general recommended precautions are as follows:

  • Please also take advantage of the Everbridge Emergency Alert Program. This system enables us to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods. You will receive time-sensitive messages wherever you specify, such as your home, mobile or business phones, email address, text messages and more. You pick where, you pick how.
  • In advance of the snow storm/hurricane, fill up on water, non-perishable food, gasoline, medications you need, and enough money to last for a while.  If you have a generator, start it up to make sure it is full of fuel and working.
  • In advance of the snow storm/hurricane, move fragile adults (esp. elderly, pregnant) or children (esp. special needs) to areas not expected to be hit as hard.  This means having fragile adults, children, or pets stay with relatives or friends who live much further inland.
  • When the storm/hurricane hits, be prepared to shelter in place for at least the first 48 hours.  (Sometimes much longer.  This is while Eversource clears downed power lines, and local flooding disperses.)  Have adequate water and enough food that does not require electricity to prepare.
  • Stay off roads and highways unless it is an emergency.
  • Call 9-1-1 if you have an emergency, but know emergency crews may not be able to reach you if roads are blocked or flooded.
  • For important information during and after the storm/hurricane, listen to your car radio, if necessary.
