Public Transportation

Within Columbia, public transportation is provided by the Windham Region Transit District (WRTD)

WRTD services consist of Dial-A-Ride (click here), the Storrs-Willimantic Bus (click here) fixed route service, the Willimantic City Bus (click here) fixed route service, the Route 32 Commuter Bus (click here) service between Willimantic, Norwich and Foxwoods Resort Casino. While all WRTD services are open to the public, the Route 32 Commuter Bus Service is intended to help individuals access employment and employment-related activities.

The WRTD also helps the Town of Columbia apply for and spend the State Municipal Transportation Grant, which allows Columbia residents to be driven to medical related locations (hospitals, doctors' offices, etc...) in out-of-District towns in exchange for a $25 fee payable to the Town of Columbia.  Grant money left over at the end of the Fiscal Year funds wellness trips for Columbia senior citizens and the physically impaired.

To arrange for a routine Dial-a-Ride trip, please call the WRTD at (860) 456-2223.

To arrange for an out-of-District medical trip, please contact the Columbia Town Administrator's Office at (860) 228-0110.

More about the WRTD
The WRTD was formed in 1979 with the towns of Windham, Mansfield, and Coventry voting to join. Subsequently, Ashford, Hampton and Columbia joined. Representatives from these six towns meet quarterly to act on matters necessary in managing the district's affairs. WRTD's service area also includes Chaplin, Lebanon, Scotland and Willington.

WRTD revenues come from the Federal Transit Administration (click here), the CT Department of Transportation (click here), member towns, fares, donations, and advertising.
