Pistol Permits

Pistol Permits are processed in the Town Administrator's Office. Click on the links below for the Pistol Permit Application and the Noncriminal Justice Applicant's Privacy Rights Form.

The following fees are associated with the temporary pistol permit process:

  1. Notary fee - $5 cash or check (Town of Columbia) -  Applicant may have permit application notarized elsewhere if he/she chooses.
  2. Processing fee - $70 cash or check (Town of Columbia).
  3. Federal Background Check fee - $13.25 (paid online with a credit card)
  4. State Background Check fee - $75.00 (paid online with a credit card)

Forms and Documentation Needed Before Pre-Enrollment

Pre-Enrollment Process

Pre-enrollment on the Connecticut Criminal History Request System (CCHRS) System Prior to Fingerprinting:

  1. Each Applicant must be registered in the CCHRS system prior to fingerprinting. The CCHRS website page is https://ct.flexcheck.us.idemia.io/CCHRSPreEnroll/
  2. Enter the Service Code: F070-8C99 (the 0 is numeral zero). The screen will prompt you to confirm the information is correct.
  3. Enter in pre-enrollment information.
  4. Final step to complete the pre-enrollment will be the payment of $88.25 via credit card.

After Registration is Complete:

  1. When the registration is complete, the applicant will be assigned an Applicant Tracking Number. A PDF document with the Applicant Tracking Number and instructions for obtaining fingerprinting services will be emailed to the Applicant. The Applicant is required to print the PDF document and bring it to the fingerprinting location. Troop K in Colchester provides fingerprinting daily at 7AM, 3PM and 11PM. There is a $15.00 fee payable by check or money order, No Credit Cards accepted. Troop K is located at 15A Old Hartford Road, Colchester, CT 06415. (860) 465-5400. The Applicant Tracking Number will be used at the LiveScan (fingerprinting location – Troop K) to electronically retrieve the applicant pre-enrollment information prior to fingerprinting. This seamless transfer of data will streamline the processing of the fingerprint-based criminal history checks.
  2. Once the background check is completed the Town will be notified of the results. The Resident State Trooper will review the application and background check and the First Selectman will review and sign the temporary permit.
  3. The temporary permit is only valid for 60 days. To get the permanent pistol permit please go to the DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY SERVICES AND PUBLIC PROTECTION. YOU MUST APPEAR IN PERSON AT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS, NO APPOINTMENTS NEEDED:
